Throughout Year 1 and 2 the children will continue to learn Phonics through the Read Write Inc. Ruth Miskin Scheme.
Synthetic phonics also known as inductive phonics, is a method of teaching reading which first teaches the letter sounds and then builds up to blending these sounds together to achieve full pronunciation of whole words.
All children in Year 1 will take a phonics screening check at the end of the year.
The check will take place in June when your child will read 40 words out loud to a teacher. You’ll find out how your child did, and their teacher will assess whether he or she needs extra help with reading. If your child doesn’t reach the required threshold in the check, they’ll have to do it again in Year 2.
